Salem Port Tabbed For $2.4 Million Federal Grant

SALEM, MA —Salem’s deep-water berth is one of 25 ports across the country that will share in $241 million in U.S. Department of Transportation grants.

Salem is set to receive more than $2.4 million for a project that includes improvements and enhancements. including two moorings, a new catwalk and improvements to the passenger access pathway.

The grants are part of the Biden-Harris Administration’s Port Action Plan, designed to strengthen the supply chain and reduce inflation pressures associated with high demand, through the bipartisan infrastructure bill.

“U.S. maritime ports play a critical role in our supply chains,” U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg said in a statement. “These investments in our nation’s ports will help support American jobs, efficient and resilient operations, and faster delivery of goods to the American people.”

Acting Maritime Administrator Lucinda Lessley said the port investments support a shift to cleaner transportation and will help create more economic activity and good-paying jobs for Salem and other recipient cities.

“The Port Infrastructure Development Program is an important part of building back better for
our ports, our communities, our economy, and our people,” she said

All PIDP grant award recipients must apply, comply with and implement all provisions of the Buy American Act.
